The first service of the Ministry of Education and Culture exclusively responsible for Culture
was created in 1965 under the name Cultural Service, which in 1992, following its upgrading to
a Department, was renamed Department of Cultural Services.
The Cultural Services are the main exponent of the cultural policy of the state as regards
contemporary culture. By being responsible for the development of the Letters and the Arts
in Cyprus, informing the public about cultural events and their participation in them, and
promoting the achievements of our cultural activities abroad, the Department plays a vital role
in shaping the cultural image of the country.
