The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth introduced Public Summer Schools for the first time in the summer of 2015 in order to respond to a need that had been growing in the last few years.
The summer schools’ programme includes creative and recreational activities and function from the first day of the summer holidays for a duration of five weeks. Nevertheless, priority is given to children from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background.
Public summer schools have been positively received since, among other things, they:
Assist in reducing the gap between children of different socioeconomic backgrounds as regards the opportunities for and access to creative educational experiences during summer holidays.
Promote a well-rounded development of children through various creative activities.
Assist working parents as regards children supervision during the summer period when schools are closed
Contribute to preventing and reducing juvenile delinquency.
Reduce time children spend watching television.
Provide a healthy breakfast
Maximise use of public school buildings and equipment beyond the school year
Contribute to reducing unemployment by offering work to unemployed young teachers who work alongside more experienced, tenured colleagues
Public summer schools follow a well-designed and flexible programme based on the children’s needs, abilities and interests. The programme can include include Artistic Expression, Design and Technology, Music, Theatre, Dancing, IT, Indoor and Outdoor Group Games, Drama activities, etc.
