Starting Age for Compulsory Pre-Primary School and Primary School
The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth has reviewed the Pre-Primary School and Primary School starting age as part of its continuing efforts for the quality improvement and upgrading of the Cyprus Educational System and guided by its primary concern for the best interest and progress of all children.
After researching the issue of school starting age, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth prepared a relevant Policy Document. As a result of this effort, and after taking into consideration the views expressed by stakeholders, the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth has put forward a proposal to the Council of Ministers.
On the 9th of January 2018, the Council of Ministers decided (No Decision 84.078) to maintain the age of compulsory school attendance for children in Pre-Primary School at the age of 4 years and 8 months, as is currently the case. At the same time, it decided to gradually increase the school starting age for:
(a) Pre-Primary class from the current age of 4 years and 8 months to the age of 5.
(b) Primary School from the current age of 5 years and 8 months to the age of 6.
Consequently, all children should complete the specific ages, before September 1st of the year during which they will attend school.
